Bedfordshire & Luton Traveller Education Service

Service:
(a) For Traveller Families (Gypsies, Irish Travellers, New-Age Travellers, Fairground, Circus & Bargee) mobile settled on sites and settled in houses for less than two years:-

Assistance with access to schools, pre-school education
Support for maintaining attendance
Support for establishing and maintaining home/school links
School transport (in special circumstances)
Uniform grants (if family meets certain criteria)

(b) For Schools:-

Advice and support for full access to the curriculum
Assistance with the transfer of school records
Support for initial assessment on arrival of pupils
Classroom support for pupils with priority additional educational needs due to a late start to formal education and/or interrupted educational opportunities
Support for establishing and maintaining home/school links
In-service training
Loan of specialist resources

(c) For other Educational Establishments, Agencies and Voluntary Organisations:-

Training
Advice concerning the educational needs of Travellers
Support for networking with other agencies/LEAs working with the Traveller communities

Referral procedure:
Families, schools and all agencies and LEAs refer direct to the Service. Priority for in-class support is established through a needs assessment.
