Holiday in Malta
After all the anticipation, holidays can sometimes be an anticlimax, and in some cases a big letdown. I've put these pages up, totally unsolicited, simply because our holiday in August 1997 proved to be such a shining exception. My wife Jill, my daughters Pauline and Philippa, and I so enjoyed our time here that we have made it a firm resolve to visit Malta again. We were flying from Gatwick, and if you are looking for cheap flights from London, the Sunday supplements or Exchange and Mart will be full of them. Our experience is that prices can vary enormously, so a little time spent on the 'phone can enable you to save quite a lot of money. Depending on the time of year, prices can vary from as little as £120 return to £230 from cheap-flight agents. Our flight took under three hours, was by Air Malta, and was comfortable, though in order to choose the cheapest flights we had to travel at midnight!
Incidentally, visitors to Belvanjos come from many different countries, and this added to our enjoyment of our stay. When we booked, Henry had thoughtfully sent, with his letter of confirmation, a coin so that we could contact him the moment we arrived. And sure enough, within twenty minutes or so, there he was at the airport to greet us. I cannot adequately describe just how much we enjoyed our stay. It seemed that within minutes we were old friends. And both Henry and Maryanne had this delightful knack of knowing when we were ready for company, or when we preferred to be alone. It was a lovely restful atmosphere. Henry has a seemingless endless knowledge of Malta, and his enthusiasm is infectious! He also has a video describing some of the features of this island, and seems to know just how much a visitor can take in each day. The island is very small - about the size of Greater London. We were advised to hire a car, which was available at a very reasonable rental. The roads are an interesting experience, and do take a map, because the road signs are sometimes nonexistent! However, we found that the Maltese were always willing to help. Indeed, on one occasion, having lost our way, we came up to a policeman on a motorcycle to ask directions, and his colleague said "Follow me" and escorted us to our destination!
