Holiday in Malta (3)

Mdina has to be another place of call. It is inland a little (but remember that it's only 20 miles or so from end of the island to the other!) and was the original capital of Malta. Is is now known as the silent city. A lovely place. Here again there's an audio-visual experience, complete with headphones, which one can enjoy. I have to admit that we enjoyed moving the controls so that our commentary was in another language - it all added to the occasion!

At the other end of the town one can see way into the distance St. Paul's Bay, and gain a magnificent view of the island. It's worth calling at La Fontana, a pleasant little restaurant at the top, and taking in the scene.

On the way back to Valetta you may notice a Crafts Centre. Here you can see people making the beautiful glassware for which Malta is famous. We stood there fascinated as a glass jar was made in front of our eyes. There is a shop there, and again the prices are modest. One can pay by VISA if one wishes.

Henry suggested an all-day trip by ferry to Comino, a tiny island near Gozo. It really was a delightful experience, and for fifteen pounds including a meal and wine, was excellent value. On two or three occasions we went in near to the island to see some of the magnificent lagoons, and later stopped for a while so that most could go for a swim in the clear, warm water.

We were in Malta for only one week, and have only touched upon a few of the fascinating things to see. We cannot praise Henry and Maryanne highly enough for all the care they lavished on our behalf, and for a holiday which we will remember and treasure for many years to come. Their address is below. We have no doubt that you too will enjoy being at Belvanjos as much as we did.
