Francis Bedford is known for some outstanding architectural photographs, some of which were for use with a stereoscope. In 1862 Queen Victoria appointed Bedford to tour the Middle East with the Prince of Wales (later Edward VII), after which over one hundred and seventy of his photographs were published. He also produced some stereoscopes and appears to have been commissioned to produce photographs for the company established by Francis Frith.

Bedford was one of the founders and a Vice-President, for two years, of the Photographic Society, which came into being in 1853.

Picture, taken in Exmouth, 1864.
