ENGLAND, William

William England started as a portrait photographer, but then became involved in travel photography, specialising particularly in pictures of Switzerland. He was heavily involved in stereoscopic photography, producing thousands of pictures. He is best remembered, however, for having invented, in the early 1860s, the focal-plane shutter.
