LUMIERE, Louis and Auguste

Louis: b. 1862; d. 1954 Auguste: b. 1864; d. 1948

The Lumière brothers made a distinctive contribution to photography in various areas. They are perhaps best known for having produced a Cinematograph camera in 1895, using a claw movement which advanced the film, a principle which still applies in motion photography today. They also produced the Autochrome plate in 1907, the first practical colour photography process. Louis received the Progress Medal of the Royal Photographic Society in 1909.
