OXYMEL PROCESS, The

The Oxymel process was one of the first "dry" ones to be used. It was invented by J. D. Llewelyn c. 1856, and was immediately hailed by the Illustrated Evening News as a considerable advance. It was variation on the Collodion process, but it differed from this in that it was given further treatment in a bath of oxymel - honey/vinegar solution. The resulting product was much less sensitive than the collodion process, but it meant that negatives could be prepared in advance, and later developed at leisure.
