Maimara
Maimara
is in a valley some 12,000 feet high in the Andes - a small village that hardly
ever appears on the maps! At that height it takes a little getting
used to, as far as breathing is concerned. The views, with multi-coloured
mountains, are stunning, and I only wish I had the time, energy and
money to revisit this lovely place!

The Internet is full of surprises! On one occasion I was searching
for sites relating to Maimara, and up came this picture which will
mean little to anyone except myself - for it is the very house in
which my parents and I stayed for quite a number of years! At the
time my parents were helping to run an orphanage. I last saw the house
in 1954 when I came to England. I have since learned that it has been
converted into a Christian holiday camp for young people. Not only
that, but the person who has a major part in the activities at the
centre is the nephew of one of the orphans I knew then - Juan Vaca.
Small world! They have a site (www.maimara.org)
and by all accounts the venture there is highly popular.
Near
to Maimara is Tilcara, where there is a settlement/museum. I must
have been about thirteen then.
