The picture here shows the extent of the devastation caused in the 1914-18 war. Hardly a building in Ypres was standing.

Fairly near to the town is Hill 62. Why the name? Simply because on the maps highest points were indicated in metres. Not too far away is Hill 60. Both of these areas saw the worst of the fighting.



At Hill 62 there is a memorial to the many Canadians who died in the conflict. The geography is not quite right - this is not Mount Sorrel, as the inscription states, but it hardly matters.
